🏳️🌈GROWING UP GAY IN SINGAPORE🇸🇬
Thanks to Lisa Mulligan for having me on your podcast “A Dog Called Diversity”. In this conversation, we spoke about the challenges growing up gay in Singapore, my coming out story, and why representation matters.
There’s still a long way to go for Singapore when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. Same-sex sexual activity between males is illegal in Singapore, even if it is consensual and takes place in private.
This law is generally not well enforced however because same-sex relationships are not recognized under the law, there are many challenges for LGBTQ+ people including not being able to marry, not being able to adopt children as a couple and not having anti-discrimination protection under law.
I am lucky to have braced through all that despite the struggles, and worked/working in companies that allow me to bring my best (true) self to work - but I’m highly aware that most people are still struggling.
What more can we do to make schools, workplaces or even our homes a safer and more inclusive place for our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters?
