read a book
“We spend far too much time at work for it not to have deep meaning” argues Satya Nadella in his book Hit Refresh.

In my quest to ‘learn-to-read’ and ‘read-to-learn’, picked up this book and it delivers on so many fronts. While at the base level, it is about the story of Microsoft’s transformation led by Satya and how his own belief is shaping that transformation. At the same time, the author argues and urges that ‘empathy’ will becomes most invaluable quality in a world where technology is powering and over-powering every aspect of our lives.

What I learned from Hit Refresh:

1. Empathy can be a very powerful driver. It can be the lighthouse in the storm and help differentiate the signal from noise. As a product manager, I never thought about the role of empathy in designing a product but now I do realise the impact it can have.

2. You don’t always have to ruthlessly compete with your peers/competitors. There are times when you gain multiple-fold by partnering with them and by sharing/giving than by being a hard-boiled competitor.

3. Diversity & inclusion are not just some fancy corporate ethos but truly adopting them would help us learn about our own biases and change our behaviours.
