OKRs are supposed to enable teams to focus. They can also cause confusion and frustration, mostly because product teams struggle to recognize the link between their work and the strategic direction of their companies.

OKRs won't simply work if a product team doesn't understand why they are doing what they are doing and can't measure their contribution to their company's success.

I've been using impact mapping as a complementary approach to tackle this problem and bridge the gap between the company-level goals and the product team activities. In this article, I've shared how Tim Herbig's impact mapping approach helps you connect the dots and define outcome-oriented OKRs.

30 Days as Marketing Hire #1

I wanted to define the marketing strategy. So, I did some research to know more about the personas and it helped me outlined the GTM strategy:

  • Where we're now. How many customers we have, who they are, and where we fall in the competitive landscape.
  • Where we want to go. Marketing goals, objectives, and KPIs, who the target audience is, positioning, projects, and channels.

Defining OKRs

I wanted to keep it simple.

  1. Write down the goal,
  2. Set a time period,
  3. Assign 2-3 Key Results or measurable objectives that we can track.

A good objective communicates what we're doing and why. It describes an outcome that needs to be reached, and that's measurable.
