Big year! I brought my second child into the world, sacrificed 780+ hours of sleep to raise little humans, recruited dozens of excellent people into tech. Brainstormed new business ideas with friends and mentors (3 good ideas, the rest bad). Developed a dedicated meditation practice (3,000 hours clocked so far), saved a lot of money, learned 25+ new recipes, went through an impressive amount of Meiomi Pinot Noir. Let's go, 2022!

So happy to have become a mother in 2020 (at the start of the pandemic 😱).

Motherhood is not a job, it is a career. And it can be an incredible career advantage.

In all industries and at all levels, moms are passed over for new jobs and promotions based on outdated biases of what motherhood means – the motherhood penalty vs the fatherhood bonus. The data tells the story:

  • 69% of US workers say mothers are more likely to be passed up for a new job than other employees
  • 41% view moms in the workplace as less devoted to their work, and 38% judge them for needing a more flexible work schedule
  • On average, men's earnings increased more than 6% on having children, while women's decreased 4% for each child they have – and the gap persists even after controlling for factors like experience, education, hours worked, and spousal incomes
It is time to recognize motherhood for what it really is: an endless source of professional skills. 91% of workers agree moms bring unique skills (agility, flexibility, emotional intelligence, communication skills) to leadership roles – anyone who has ever spent more than 5 minutes with an infant or toddler can understand why.
