In one week I learned how to appreciate #art a bit more and discovered something I didn’t know I would be interested in: the Devil!

Here is a quick summary of what we learned at The Garden this week:

😞 The science behind stress. When we are stressed we don’t feel thirsty or hungry, and we become somewhat like zombies. What can make stress worse is the fact that sometimes it is normalised in Western cultures “shut up and put up with it” - with Dr. David Plans from Royal Holloway

🖼️ What makes Vincent van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses such a wonderful piece of art and what art is more in general. It is difficult if not impossible to say what is art. More likely the real question to ask is “when” something is considered art - with Dr. James Fox from Cambridge University

📕 How the Devil came to hold such a central place in Christian thought. Starting from the Middle Ages, when the Devil reached the height of his imaginative popularity, to his (her?) slow withdrawal from public affairs - with Dr Mikki Brock from Washington and Lee University

What did you learn this week?

I would love to hear what your lightbulb moments are if you ended up in one of them. Next week we have an exciting talk about gender identity with the author of Galileo’s Middle Finger.

Stay curious!

The absolute highlight of my career so far is the privilege of helping to organise Mixin conference alongside some very talented and humble Perth web folk—Kylie Timpani, Mandy Michael, Patima Tantiprasut, Phuong Huynh, Joshua Allen, and Meagan Tan.

We had some amazing speakers from around the world come to Perth and inspire our attendees—I definitely recommend checking out the videos!

GeekcampSG 2021 was fun to organise!

We decided to host it on Gather and that was a very good decision because it heavily replicated a physical conference that everyone misses very much.

I learnt a lot in the process, and also got to catch up with some of the people involved in local meetups.

Oh, P.S. if you want to help out next year, drop me a message!
