Case: how to explore a product approach if you’re non-profit

Our client — National Technological Initiative. It’s a non-profit organization that holds contests and olympiads for talented adolescents from Russia.

Due to non-profit specificity our client had problems with seeing his business as a product. We helped him with that by automating processes that manage team integrations, olympiads event management and data storing.

In this collaboration I personally am not an operating manager, but a tracker. Once in two weeks we have sessions, where we formulate business growth challenges, and find cheap and fast ways to test hypotheses. As a result we have plans on what and in which order to do, and which metrics to consider. Or we decide not to do something and this is also often a great result.

It’s critical to note that our attention is always on the side of a real human behavior, which allows us to see, understand and measure if our work matters and delivers results - not a coder`s feature for the sake of coding.

Case: how to make transition from author’s market to reader’s market

I’m a co-founder of the publishing service Rideró. For a long time I was a Head of Product — I managed IT and marketing teams. Usually it is CEO’s prerogative, but Rideró’s specific case was to close the gap between those two teams and to approach the problem from a user experience management point of view — and this is where my art director background was useful.

So we changed the product vector away from the WYSIWYG editor and made the first self-publishing service in Russia.

Today we’re a national leader, with a plenty of room for growth. Initially, I thought it was going to be a two years story, but it`s already been eight years running.

When we started, Rideró was a product driving business. Now it’s a sales driven business. Currently, we are transitioning the team to the next operational stage, my role included. I personally am a better fit at a launching phase of a business.
