Taught my first HyFlex course on short notice in a pandemic

At BU, this was called LfA (Learn from Anywhere). Not only was this the first time teaching this particular class, I’d never taught to both a classroom and to a camera at the same time. Technology was a huge challenge, especially keeping students engaged who were on Zoom, or in the classroom. I really had to work to make this work, and adjusted to pre-recording the critical parts of my lectures so that I knew for sure my international students would have access. I was especially concerned for my students who spoke English as a second language, and may not be able to hear me well or see my lips though a mask.

This experience was what gave me the confidence to start my YouTube channel. I recorded over 80 videos for this class alone on all topics related to HTML, CSS, web design, accessibility, and JavaScript. This was probably one of the toughest, but most rewarding semesters I’ve ever had. I actually took a photo of myself lying on the floor of the hallway, exhausted, on break just before my last lecture that semester.

You can see the results of that class here!
