Whenever I suggested in the past that someone switch their geospatial server to open source tools (namely GeoServer) I got complaints that it's not as comfortable and that you can't style your layers visually in GeoServer.

While that is still true, there is a nice little workaround where you can style your GeoServer layers while seeing them using Maputnik and the MBStyle plugin.
