Mentored someone

Mentored myself, actually

Without disputing the applicability of comparing Web3 to the Renaissance, I am left wondering if a true sign of our times is that we have the space and leisure to make this assessment so early in the age. I doubt the earliest days of the Renaissance or Industrial Revolution were characterized by such early estimations of the potential impact of the age... but I'd like to find out.

Nice to start the week thinking deeply and primed for deeper investigation.

Ended my journey as Co-Founder, Head of Product at Bidvine!

After trying unsuccessfully to raise a new round of funding or finding a net positive buyer for Bidvine, we ended up selling the platform to Bark.com. It was an unfortunate end to 7 years of work.

We built a great team and great tech, and it was tough to see that team disperse and that tech essentially discarded. 2021 saw us reach the payoff of months of work trying to get fully green on Google's Core Web Vitals. Arguably, we became leaders in understanding and overcoming the technical challenges to highly optimize a React-based marketplace. Also, the work we did using ElasticSearch and a complex, data-rich algorithm to upgrade our marketplace matching is something I'll carry as a major technical achievement.

Thanks to my co-founders, Sohrab Jahanbani and Russ Morgan.
Thanks to the original ones including Dan, Vikas, Jack, Kaho, and Rabi.
Thanks to the next ones including Sarah, Gabriel, Ian and Dakota.
Thanks to the U of Waterloo co-op program for all the support and great staff over our 7 years.

Big thanks to our investors. If you are looking for investment plus the support of great humans, then Andre de Haes and Alex Brunicki from Backed.VC and Gaith Yaffi and Abdullah Yaffi from B&Y Venture Partners should be your first calls.

Finished a Triathlon

Ironman 70.3 Muskoka

On a wild August day in Huntsville, Ontario I finished Ironman 70.3 Muskoka for the second time and my fifth crack at this distance. The swim was cloudy and tranquil, the bike was rain and lightening, and the run was sunny and hot. It would have been good to switch those strong a bit but I did pretty well. Not my best 70.3 time but so great to be back out and racing. Such a great community. Had a great weekend with my family support team.

Connected on Polywork

The Power of Polywork

Had my first connection request on Polywork today. Maybe it's the strength and stage of the community but this instantly felt so much more relevant and personal - and interesting - than the daily "have you considered outsourcing your development?" messages that I get on LinkedIn.

Launched a Product Feature

"Eyes and ears" ideation

Launched our Lead Insights feature to build on the theme of radical transparency. Great uptake so far. This was actually one of those features that didn't take a massive amount of work - it just took listening and looking for ways to help our pros become data-informed and for looking at the kind of daily-use features that would empower them to make smarter decisions on @bidvine.

Maybe someone calls this "eyes and ears" ideation.

Launched a new website
Started using my Polywork profile for my personal website - I mean, kind of a "new website" but this is such an awesome new tool that I think it's worth the shout!
