The Flat White

If You Know You Know

There’s something about using simple descriptor words to name something that makes said thing seem so native to its category, that only people in the know are allowed to refer to it. For example, the Flat White. On the surface, you would think having such simple words would make this particular coffee beverage a non-threatening choice. And yet, in its simplicity lies uncertainty. What do the words flat and white actually refer to? Like ordering a dirty martini or whiskey neat, you have to understand and appreciate the beverage before being opened to the world of its shorthand names.

Luckily, we’re here to help with that!

I Come From a Land Down Under

The Flat White was born in the land of dingos and kangaroos, debates land it somewhere between Australia and New Zealand, and grew up as an option for coffee drinkers transitioning into espresso that wanted to maintain the familiarity of drip coffee. As opposed to the thick cushion of milk foam you’ll find at the top of a cappuccino, a Flat White is… well, flat. Steamed milk gives this drink very little lift or aeration, so the milk “white” is “flat”. Think of it as a stronger latte. Its traditionally smaller serving size allows it to maintain a more concentrated taste. It also comes standard with two shots of espresso, as opposed to the option of one or two inherent in cappuccinos and lattes. But rest assured, just like your lattes, Flat Whites will also come with that beautiful, Instagram ready milk art!

Should I Get It?

So there you have it, a Flat White get its name from its flat white milk addition! You’ll want to try a Flat White if you are especially looking for a rich coffee flavor, but still would like the softer cream texture. Plus, when you order one, you’ll sound like you’re speaking in code with the barista!
