Hi folks!

By the way, I started a new job! But wait, I already started a new job about just over a year ago, right? So what's the story behind "a new job, again"? Let's unpack this!

What did I leave and why?

I worked in various French "ESN" for about 6 years. Basically, I was a consultant, some sort of code mercenary (I don't like this analogy because I'm not a soldier, but you get the idea). When I entered this domain, I left a software editor and thought "as a consultant, I'll see more things and learn a lot. And I'll get paid more".

I was partially right: l met some incredibly talented people and learnt a lot with them. And as I hopped from on employer to another, my pay-checks got bigger.

About the money, though, I eventually did the math and realised that I was at the losing end of a strange deal. In short: I worked for a client of my company, with employees of the client. We were doing the same work regardless of who signed our pay-checks, but I did it for a lower salary and less PTO, while costing more money to the client. I wanted to be more fairly compensated for my work, but my employer couldn't do much about it: there was only so much the client was willing to pay for, and some kind of margin had to be made from my billed hours. I don't blame them for that situation, the system is just kinda broken.

I had a choice to make:
  1. Accept the situation. The major pain point was my income: less than what I could earn at a similar position, but not absolutely bad all things considered
  2. Become a freelance: I would definitely have earned more, but I would have to be my own salesperson and do a lot more paperwork. And if I got sick, thing could get complicated.
  3. Get a new job. Not any new job: one that checks 100% of my "dreamjob checklist", no matter how long it takes.
I chose option 3... And it didn't take that long 🎉

What's the new job?

My new job is somewhat similar to my old job: I test pieces of software, and automate some tests. But I'm not a consultant anymore, I'm an employee. And I chose a company whose product I very strongly believe in, something that makes me think at the end of the day "I'm useful to something really cool".

That company is Incepto Medical: we distribute AI tools (some of them produce by us!) to help medical personnel with various tasks. And we assist our customers: we do what we can to be actually useful to them. That's it, that's the business: it's simple, it comes with a strong emphasis on ethics, and I love it!

I started in October, and so far so good. Hopefully I get to stay here for a long time!
