The patent was filed as a part of our Smart Chute project, which was aimed at improving multifamily recycling rates by designing a device for implementing pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) programs in a multifamily context. PAYT programs have been very effective in suburban settings at improving recycling rates, but have not been implemented in denser urban cities because of the challenge of charging money at the point of throw... enter, Smart Chute.
