The Great Prop Race: Formula 1 Edition

Since time is money, there’s rarely enough of either resource. This is the story of the great (or not-so-great) race to gather all the necessary props for Singapore’s Formula 1 season.

Leading up to the month of Formula 1 content, I was tasked to source a collection of very specific props. These included a brown pair of children’s sunglasses, striped overalls, checkered children’s socks, a checkered bag, and a black toy steering wheel. Given the tight timeline, sourcing these items from an international online seller was not feasible.

Despite how costly the children’s accessories were, I eventually found an affordable seller locally. The same could not be said about the steering wheel. Fun fact: there are no black toy steering wheels in Singapore. As a result, I procured a typical brightly coloured variant and spray-painted it black.

Fortunately, sourcing the remainder of the children’s attire was later re-delegated to the client. Since they were casting the child talent internally, they would be able to more seamlessly communicate the sizing to vendors. With the advice and assistance from my colleagues, my task became crafting the checkered paper bags

There will always be specific custom requests of all kinds in production. This experience served as an important reminder to manage those expectations whenever possible. Although challenging, I’m grateful that I could always rely on the support of my colleagues.
