Looking for co-organizers for a Queer Product Meetup

Being LGBTQ+ in tech is sometimes very challenging. DEI is often only performative, if it even exists as a category in the minds of company founders. LGBTQ+ folks can find it harder to move up the career ladder, as many forces at play, some more visible than others, put folks down and push people back.

But many LGBTQ+ folks overcome these odds to build and grow great careers in product and tech.

I'd love to bring these voices together for a broad ranging discussion on the challenges, strategies, and approaches on how to thrive as a queer person in tech. But also to connect, network, and help build community.

Reach out if this sounds interesting for you!

I'm based in Berlin, Germany, so I'd look to either organize a physical event here, or a fully remote event!

I’m thrilled to share that this idea has generated so much interest we already have eligible speakers, co-organizers, and willing guests and participants. πŸŽ‰

The next step is understanding the needs of the community! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

What discussions would you listen to?

My ideas are:

- Coming out at work
- How experience as queer immigrants affects our work relationships
- What does DEI mean to the LGBTQ+ community?
- How concepts in (queer) activism like compassion and solidarity can inform how product teams collaborate

Etc.

Let me know your thoughts in comments!! πŸ’

πŸ’― in! Would love to do a in person Berlin based event!

Yes! I think we might start with a remote event and talk about a physical version in Berlin afterwards. I’m blown away by the interest and responses.

When are you considering organizing? I'll be in Berlin the first 2 weeks of December and I would love to help organize!

No idea yet of when exactly β€” at this stage trying to determine interest and see what kind of responses we can get! I’ll keep you posted on possibilities, as a lot of folks have already written in so it’s looking like this will be happening!! πŸŽ‰

Are you looking for product people only, or devs too? I’m a dev in the US, would love to join this conversation or one like it.

Hey Ruby, I definitely include devs in the definition of product people! So you are more than welcome!

Best of luck!

Thank you, Anna! Let me know if you'd like to be a part of it. I will share details here as soon as there is anything to share!

But I’m sure you’d have questions you might want to ask! Up to you, of course. But feel welcome!

I'd just like to watch a recording or something ☺️ I don't think I have anything to contribute

Hi! I'm also an organizer of a queer-in-tech group(:q, colon-q) in South Korea. It's been a while to set up this group, but it's hard to create something productive and interesting meet up here. I would like to hear more about your insight!

Hi Jeongwon, I'd love to talk to you about your experience!

Definitely! It's amazing that you've already done so much work to prepare that. It would be just interesting enough to pull out how we think about this topic in each other's cultural context.
I have some material ! will share that sooon πŸ‘

That's very useful insight! I think a lot of people are interested in coming to an event that is ready, and I've already gotten people offering to speak, which is amazing. But it will require some upfront legwork and prep, no doubt. πŸ˜… Maybe we could hop on a call sometime soon to talk about what you did for your meetup? Would love to learn from your experience. Or read material if you have any to share! 😊

Hi, Mirza, I'm interested in helping to bring this event to life, and I would like to know more about your traction.

Hi Daniel! This is currently an idea in its early stages. I'm trying to see how much interest there -- I will post updates here as I have them.
