I've been thinking about the huge amount of waste that goes into tech hiring lately.
The process for developers is awful because one ends up spending hours repeating a lot of the same interview with different companies. Looking for a new job is like taking on a part time job. Many people may opt not to do so because of all the energy it requires. Many people may also take an offer at a place not right for them because they're too exhausted to keep looking.
The process for companies is awful similarly because of how much time is spent interviewing candidates. If you interview 10 candidates and spend 4 hours on each, that's 40 hours not building product. Then you have to account for the fact that someone who is a good developer may not actually be a good interviewer. Now you need a good chunk of your product development team working on a skill set that has little use outside of hiring.
I'd love to talk to any engineer about the process, whether you've done one too many interviews or done a ton of interviews yourself.

My entire Long Post disappeared as i was completing Spell Check. UGH... The entire structure and who is promoted to manager needs an overhaul before there will be significant changes in the hiring process...unless Candidates start setting Standards from the initial interview... for example. I have allocated a max of 4 hr to interview for this postion....or. If a decision can't be made by the 3 rd interview, I will withdraw my application. Cause honestly, if the company doesn't know if they are qualified to perform the job functions and their "personal attributes" will fit with the team/company/unit culture by the 2nd interview, after applying and submitting resume and making it through the screening app to actually be reviewed and live screened by HR before interviewing with a Unit Manager... something is very wrong.
Thanks for "reminding" me why I got out of HR/recruiting that part. It's actually entitlement at play, and it very inconsiderate and unnecessary to make candidates endure, and still not get an offer.
