This is Our History

Black death and murder have always been a form of "entertainment" in the U.S. The video soon to be released of five officers beating Tyre Nichols brutally and mercilessly is nothing different. Never does the media exploit other races' deaths in the same way.

Why do we need further "proof" that Black people die in ways that many would not inflict on animals when we have images of lynchings and crowds gathering at picnics in their Sunday's best with their children? THIS IS OUR HISTORY. THIS IS YOUR HISTORY.

And the discrepancy around the fact that the five Black officers who murdered Tyre were immediately fired when we watch countless stories of officers who are not Black receiving paid time off while they wait for decisions from police departments and the government is profoundly telling. The immediate firing, without pay, should be the norm, though those harsh terms are only applied when the victims and officers are Black.

Black folx, you do not owe anyone a conversation, nor do you need to see that video to know it was inhumane. PTSD is an actual outcome when taking in such violence. No one should witness Black brutality and murder as casually as in the U.S.

Leaders, prepare to offer grace, space, and understanding as many of us are distressed by these continued events. We are human.
