•It focuses on exploring the factors of internationalization process of Indian Family enterprises and to conceptualize a model of internationalization for Indian family businesses. •To identify and specify the archetypal characteristics of internationalization of Indian family small medium enterprises and the impact of internationalization process on current dynamics of internationalization by Indian family SMEs. •A total of 298 small medium enterprises participated in the study, and the primary instrument for data collection was questionnaire and interview.
