Negotiated an enterprise deal
Improved site performance
+ 1
I negotiated my first enterprise deal with Fastly while at The Nine!

Our site performance was suffering, so I began looking for ways to improve it that wouldn't require a complete rewrite of our CMS. After exhausting all possible improvements at the CMS layer, I began looking for a good CDN. After exploring several different providers, I eventually settled on Fastly.

Not many people at The Nine were familiar with all of the lingo surrounding CDNs, so I led the negotiations between us. I was incredibly impressed with how well their sales associates knew the product. In the end I was able to secure us a very attractive rate, and I got a LInkedIn endorsement from one of their sales leads. 😊

Hired a Software Engineer
+ 1
I started leading a small team to create a new CMS at The Nine called Forma. Forma is a complete rewrite of our internal CMS, Caboose. It's meant to be faster, smarter, and easier to use than our old CMS, and built on a solid technical foundation.

I led the hiring of a few developers at the company to help out with this new venture. I managed the direction of the project, the roadmap, and the technical architecture.

Released an Open Source Project
Built UI components
Built a feature
+ 1
I released Chorale, a renderer for Notion pages. I'd been using Notion for a while and wanted a way to use it as a CMS for my blog. Notion's public pages at the time were extremely slow. I did some digging around the Notion app using the Chrome debugger, discovered their public unofficial API, and wrote a simple NextJS app that used the API responses to render everything faster.

I announced the app on the Notion subreddit, where it became the top post of the day. I got more than 100 GitHub stars and met a lot of cool folks on Twitter.

I didn't have time to fully maintain the app / get features released quickly enough. I experienced my first case of having my code stolen when the react-notion folks copied my code without properly attributing me. This ultimately led me to being more critical of open source and keeping more of my projects privately.

Founded a student organization
Managed a Community
I founded Blueprint at UA, a student organization that builds software for nonprofits.

I founded Blueprint at UA because I saw two major needs in my community. First, students had a hard time getting the professional experience they needed before they graduated. Second, nonprofits desperately needed software, but they couldn't afford to hire help. Blueprint at UA solved both of those problems by pairing groups of students with nonprofits to solve problems for them, pro-bono. Students got to get in volunteer time, and nonprofits got the work done that they needed.
