My calling is the economics, politics, and ecology of work in a time of accelerating uncertainty in society, business, and our lives.
I've been studying work and the tools we use to adapt to the future for the past three decades. I'm the chief scientist of Work Futures, a research group. In the past, I was the head of research at Gigaom, president of the social media pioneer Corante, a software entrepreneur, a computer scientist, and a magazine columnist.
I coined the terms ‘hashtag’, ‘work management’, ‘social tools’, ‘publicy’, and ‘spreadbase’.
I'm editor and chief contributor to the Work Futures newsletter, a contributor to numerous publications, such as Reworked, Wired, and Darwin, and served as an advisor to dozens of companies and organizations, such at the Pew Research Center, Microsoft, the Internet Archive, and Bitly, to name just a few.
