I mostly like making software 💾 and soft-cheese 🧀. I just need to be creating something whether that's software, hardware, food, events, whatever.

For just over 15 years I've been building a variety of web applications, across a spectrum of domains and scales.

If I can, I love working with Ruby, I'm also occaisionally involved with RailsGirls, and was an organiser for both RubyConf AU 2017 and 2018.

My first ever attempt at streaming.

I was inspired by my niece diving into the world of Twitch, and had been looking for an excuse to play my old favourite adventure games - particularly Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Unsurprisingly, there's not a huge audience for these games, but I had some actual, organic viewers, who were helping out with suggestions and tips in the chat, and I had an absolute blast.

Planning to work my way through the Lucasarts and Sierra back-catalogues, and see where we go from there.

I can't wait to do it again!

So excited, and so lucky to be taking over leadership of the Bookings and Payments team here at Qantas Hotels.

This is a truly incredible group of people, with some amazing technology, and I'm seriously looking forward to all the bananas stuff we're gonna build over the next few years.

Cogent are a seriously incredible crew.

Being part of a values-driven organisation really affirmed for me how leading with clear values is the foundation to any successful team. I'm so thankful for the opportunity that they've provided to me over the last few years, and I will miss everyone dearly.

Luckily, they're all spread out over Melbourne's best orgs, so chances are I get to keep working with at least some of them!

I was never sure if consulting would be a good fit for me, professionally, but turns out I love coming into orgs that are looking for a boost, or some fresh, outside opinions. On the other hand, I find the transient nature of the roles a real struggle, and am looking for something where I can really set down some roots and invest in a single product for a long while.

In the end, I think that Cogent has really taught me the value of (extreme) transparency, and that ultimately it's the people that make a product good, not the engineering.

I'd always wanted an ortholinear keyboard, and there weren't a lot of USB-C options around, so I set about building one of my own design. Quick rundown of the features:

  • 69 keys (5 rows, 14 columns, 2u spacebar)
  • Gateron Blue mechanical key switches
  • USB-C interface
  • All point-to-point wiring
  • Laser-cut sandwich case of bamboo and perspex, machined by https://www.ponoko.com/
  • Laser-cut, stainless steel switch plate from https://lasergist.com/
  • Some RGB lighting (of course)
  • Hand-rolled firmware
Do you use it? No. I think I went a bit overboard in terms of how many keys I actually need, and I find I get lost on it quite easily, and some of the important things (backspace, backspace, backspace) are notoriously difficult to reach.

It was a super fun project though, and I loved being able to tie all the things I love together: keyboards, software, hardware, firmware, and industrial design.

10/10 would build (a different design) again.

So, we did a thing: 420 attendees, 18 speakers, and 2 massive days: #rubyconf_au 2018 was an immensely special event, more than 13 months in the planning. As much as I would like to take all the credit, none of it would have happened without Mel Kaulfuss.

Mel was incredible in every respect: truly the heart and soul of this event, and the absolute master of getting shit done.

I am lucky to have been able to call her a colleague, and I am grateful and proud to call her a friend. ❤️ So... thank you, Mel.

Also, sorry about my giant mega-ego taking up so much of that stage ✨ I do hope we get to do that again sometime.

I'd also love to thank all of our other organisers, volunteers, sponsors and of course, Ruby Australia. Without the trust and support of this incredible community we would never have been able to make any of this happen.
