Well, our story #25 is on the TV series ’#Friends’ and how #SpareRoom's data science consultant Caroline Zunckel solves the ‘pivot’ problem.

One of the most memorable scenes of the show is in the episode ‘The One with the Cop,’ where Ross buys a new sofa for his apartment. After turning down the furniture store’s delivery service, Ross is horrified when he, Rachel and Chandler can’t get the couch up the stairs in his building.

Well, Caroline Zunckel analysed the scene, and came to the conclusion that it was possible for the gang to get the sofa up the stairs- found out by using the #Pythagoras’ theorem.

She said: “By applying Pythagoras’ theorem to the estimated measurements of Ross’s sofa in a vertical position and dimensions of the stairs, I was able to establish that it would have been possible to get the item upstairs.

“He would also have to factor in this equation: Angle of vertical tilt (T) = 44.15064 -11.94274xWS (Width of the Stairwell) + 8.69119xWC (Width of the Couch) + 3.65961xLC (Length of the Couch).”

If that went over your head, Caroline believes that instead of focusing on pivoting the couch, Ross should have tried tilting it instead.

There’s even a handy picture guide for those of us that got a headache just looking at that equation.
Well, math solves most things, isn’t it?!
