A book which gives an entertaining reference to the role of mathematics in everyday life forms our story #21.

It is a fascinating compilation of everyday events analysed for their probability of occurring and how those odds are determined using mathematical equations and science.

Did you know that the digits of pi can and have been used to write poetry? and,
Alhambra Palace in Spain employs geometry and patterns to create optical illusions?
How computer programs scan for plagiarism in college assignments?

One of the most amusing books that I have read is ‘The Math Behind...: Discover the Mathematics of Everyday Events’ written by Colin Beveridge covers all these topics and much more.

The writing is crisp, and Beveridge presents these in very simple fashion that make you love math. If one is curious, then this is the go-to book. The book is an entertaining, intelligent, and different look at the world around us.

The book is divided into six chapters.
Some of the questions covered are as follows:
*What makes certain songs so catchy?
*How to play the lottery?
*The secret behind Michael Jordan's air time.
*Is it possible to have a car journey with no red lights?
*Does repeatedly clicking a mouse make it work any faster?
*How illusionists use mathematics?
*The amount of G-force on a rollercoaster.

Do give it a read.
