Spoke about mental health

👂 R U OK? 👂

Today, we celebrate R U OK? Day at HubSpot, but in fact, every day should be a R U OK? Day. We often move past our days swiftly, conquering meetings and tasks, and especially working from home it is harder to connect deeply with our peers at work.

Taking intentional time out to ask someone if they are okay has become significantly more important.

R U OK? Day is originated in Australia as a day of action to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with those around them. To start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling with life's ups and downs. This day is a reminder to check in with your own mental health and with others.

During this time where mental health is more important than ever, we believe this is a great time to learn from our Australian colleagues and support one another by asking R U OK? at HubSpot.

Take the step forward to ask your family, colleagues and friends "Are you ok?" with the aim of taking away the stigma that surrounds discussing our mental health. Be ready to listen and be there for them.

When we check in with someone who is struggling, they can feel more supported, connected and better about their situation. Keep the conversation going and be there for someone today!

👩🏻‍💻 Social Media: Good or Bad? 👨🏻‍💻

Mum: “Boy, I saw you on TV!”

Was on Mediacorp Pte Ltd Channel 8’s Frontline Connects Season 2 (前线开讲2) last night. In this episode, we discussed about the topic - “Is Social Media good or bad?”

The internet has become a significant part of our daily lives. So too has social media.

Social media and technology offer us greater convenience and connectivity, helping us stay connected with our friends and family outside of our physical proximity especially during this pandemic.

It is also a great marketing tool for businesses, allowing them to reach wider audiences and scale faster.

However, I wish to highlight and point out the “bad” that comes with it (like I did in the show).

The very same attributes that make social media a positive force in our lives make it potentially dangerous. For example, anonymity allows for cyberbullying. This is especially problematic for everyone, as bullies can target and prey on vulnerable individuals without taking personal responsibility.

Just as it can bring people together for constructive reasons, social media can connect dissatisfied, disgruntled, and misguided people together, further fueling negative attitudes and beliefs.

Social media invites us to compare ourselves with others. For people with self-esteem issues and insecurities, hearing about other people’s happiness and successes can deepen feelings of inferiority. Some determine their self-worth based on their number of likes, shares, or other interactions they receive. Sounds any familiar?

There’s always good and bad sides to everything. The key to enjoying the benefits while avoiding the problems is to use these powerful tools sensibly, constructively, and in moderation. Like food, which we truly can’t live without, the right choices keep people healthy and satisfied, while poor choices and excess consumption may lead to significant life-threatening health conditions.
