Co-owner of BlackStar Group, but there's a lot more to me than that.
Started Learning a Language
Started learning Japanese! I've always wanted to travel the world, but I only know English, so with encouragement from a friend and the promise of a trip abroad in 2022, I'm finally dipping my toes in and really enjoying it!
Ran a Business
Survived the Pandemic
Learned some hard lessons
Survived a Pandemic. Technically it's not over yet, but I'm marking this down because honestly I didn't think we would get through this year. March 13 was the day I drove home from the office crying because I understood the pandemic was extremely serious, and I had no idea what we were going to do. If you're another small biz owner in tech and you want to talk about the struggle of that whole experience, or if you're a new business owner who wants to talk to someone who has been through some shit, I'm putting this here for your attention in particular. It has been a deeply challenging time, and IMO the best way to use this experience is to share what I've learned with anyone who's interested.
coach roller derby
joined a new team
Transferred to Free State Roller Derby. After taking a year off from CCRD, I joined a different local team that was known for having a different team culture -- less competitive, more community oriented. This team atmosphere was much more in line with my long term goals and intentions, which reinvigorated my love of the game as well as my passion for teaching and coaching.
Completed Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Level 3
Became a Yoga Therapist
Gave Yoga Therapy Sessions
Completed Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy training and became a practicing yoga therapist. This was the culmination of an approximately 3-year journey for me. I am no longer practicing therapy because the demands of my professional life don't leave room for it, but I still apply a great deal of the philosophy and techniques I learned through PRYT in my management and communication style.
Played in WFTDA D2 Playoffs
Played in D2 Playoffs with CCRD's All Stars in Lansing, MI. This is one of many tournaments I've participated in, but by far the most intense experience I've had so far. I came home with a wicked shiner.
Started playing roller derby
Joined Charm City Roller Girls (name later changed to Charm City Roller Derby). At the time, CCRG was one of the top derby leagues in the world. This new hobby introduced me to a huge community of people, and it also inspired and challenged me in ways I never imagined before. Derby would remain a focal point in my life for a long time thereafter.
